The Notifications preferences page operates on the actual model instead of a working copy. If a user cancels out of the preferences dialog all changes made to the Notifications page are reflected in the actual model and restored the next time the preferences dialog is opened.

If you have time that would be great. I think it was done this way initially since the model was still read-only.
