This is not provided by default as the FOP renderer has a tendency to go into a loop and break the build, which is especially annoying when doing a ripple or a release. We tried debugging the loop, but much more time needs to be spent on this either to engage the Apache project or to understand the code and diagnose the problem ourselves.

It can be reproduced by using the doc-pdf target in the documentation build.

Are you using doc book? With AMP I'm using a mod of the Mylyn WikiText -> DocBook -> Eclipse Help/HTML/PDF process that XText set up. The PDF production works there. See: http://git.eclipse.org/c/amp/org.eclipse.amp.git/tree/org.eclipse.amp/doc/org.eclipse.amp.doc
