See the attached screenshot.
In a basic text editor, there is whitespace on the left and right sides of the text.  These areas are used for showing diffs, folding and element selection.  However, for basic text, these areas may not be used.

If the user wants to multi-select a number of full lines, they may try to make the selection at the left edge of the editor.  Without any visual indication of where this edge is, they may make the gesture inside that left gutter with no result.

One solution would be a thin line at the edge, or would be perhaps to remove these areas entirely if they aren't being used.

I'd imagine the latter will require changes to the Text framework.
