We are considering moving Zest (and maybe GEF eventually) to GIT. At the same time, we are re-working the Zest API, and thought this might be a good opportunity to evaluate Git. We will keep the existing CVS repository for our current development, but use the new Git repository for Zest 2.0 work.

Does this seem feasible? Can we get a read/write Zest repository (that all existing GEF committers can write too)?

I've created a container here: /gitroot/gef .

You can follow the directions here: http://wiki.eclipse.org/Git#Creating_a_new_repository to init the repo.
