Description Denis Roy CLA 2010-11-11 14:00:37 EST
This forum post got me thinking:
"Webmaster please create a "Python IDE" topic branch "
http://www.eclipse.org/forums/index.php?t=msg&th=200110

The Eclipse forums are intended for user discussion regarding Eclipse and Eclipse.org projects. Of course, we don't want to be in the business of creating hundreds of forums for all the non-Eclipse.org projects out there. But it occurred to me that there are likely some projects out there that don't have user forums; users can't easily seek support and are left to fend for themselves.

Would it be a good idea to create a generic forum to allow users to discuss non-Eclipse.org projects? This may help reduce noise in the Newcomers forum as well.

Or they could use stackoverflow. I know a number of committers respond to eclipse questions there.

I do not support this motion on this basis.

Also, for this particular case, PyDev already has their own forums on SourceForge actually.

I also tend to think "better not".

All the big project hosters offer forums and mailing lists, so I have a hard time believing that there is any project without a forum unless it is abandoned.

OTOH it may be useful to have an obvious link to a list of "non-Eclipse.org IDEs" that points out the forums for those. Such a list would be especially useful for languages where there is no Eclipse.org offering.

Maybe that list could be a group in the IDE category with the explicit purpose of posting links to said forums - but I have no idea how to keep such a group from degenerating into an advertisement war without too much effort.

The "Language IDEs" category is a bit meager compared to my knowledge of languages available from Eclipse.org:
* There is no group for Photran (now in PTP) at all.
* There are no groups for the core DLTK languages in that section (Python, Ruby, Tcl, Javascript). Even if DLTK wants to stay with its single group, it should be listed here.

Oh, and please update the bug title to read non-Eclipse_.org_, the original requester has already misunderstood :-)

TL;DR
* no group for non-Eclipse.org projects
* some list of non-Eclipse.org language/IDE projects linked from the "Language IDEs" category of the forum.

If someone starts a Wiki page on wiki.eclipse.org with such a list, I can certainly link to it.

I love it Remy, thanks for your effort. I've reorganized the Forums home, and have linked to the wiki document.

I'll close this as 'fixed' since we've made some form of improvement.
