It would be useful to look for branches or tags using the "Find"-field in the history view.

I would say it is not obsolete but less important. The "Find" field is easier to find than the fact that link with selection works also for tags and branches.

Can the coding to scroll to the branch or tag be reused for the find field?

There's a new option in the dropdown and branches/tags are also found when using the default "All" option.

Note that the branch/tag has to be visible in the history to be found, e.g. with "Show All Branches and Tags" or if the shown history contains the branch/tag.
