actual: You can't turn off the tool tips in the editor. if you move the mouse over the window, you can't see your code, because everywehere a tooltip pops open.
target: option in preferences to turn off the tool tips. the tool tip will only pop open, if you press F2 on an element.

Please attach some screenshots. I think I know what you're referring to but I would rather be 100% sure.

Thank you for your quick reply.

Sometimes, if I want to click into the text, it is impossible if I move the cursor too slow, because meanwhile a tool tip pops open and hides the place I want to click.
So I would be glad, if I could disable the tool tips by preferences. Only F2 should show the tool tip.

This actually gets asked a lot on IRC though I'm not sure if it's possible to disable it or if that feature needs to be implemented.

In the last 10 years we did not get a single request for that. There are no plans to add this.

Preferences > Java > Editor > Hovers => Assign a key modifier to 'Combined Hover'. Ctrl, Shift, Alt or a combination of these is a valid modifier. The tooltip will come only when you press the key and then hover over the text.

Dani, maybe we could support other keys as well, e.g. F2 ?

And to be honest, at times when I am typing a large amount of code, I too feel the need for a command to toggle tooltip enable state :)

Yeah, I think this bug accidentally landed in Platform/Text.

That was me as I figured it'd be up to Text to provide a global (preference) override for ITextHovers to not be processed when the mouse is idling unless explicitly requested (via a keybinding or whatever).

It's more natural to use modifier keys for that and it reduces the risk of clashing with a key binding for a command.
