Denis, a couple of things about tags.

It's not clear to me how to remove tags from the submission system. It seems to me that this should be possible -- if you can add tags and edit tags, then it follows that you can delete tags.

In easy2010, after I logged in and chose the Conference Chair button, I was able to add a new tag. I was also able to edit that new tag, but I was not able to remove it. Bernd was also able to create a new tag, but was not able to remove it.

Also, can you verify for me that the two statements below are true? I want to document this on the wiki -- thanks.

- To add a new tag, you must be a Conference Chair
- To add a tag to a talk, you must be a Program Committee Member

Sorry, should have added that the program committee will be using tags starting next week (August 3), so it would be nice if all the tag stuff was working as expected by then. Not sure if the inability to delete a tag is particularly significant. As long as the PC can add tags, and we can see what tags have been applied to a submission, that should be fine.

First off -- there are two types of tags:

1. PC Tags
==========

These tags are defined by the conference chair (Using the Conference Chair button) to help the program committee categorize their talks. These are internal to the PC, not exposed to the outside world.

2. Talk Tags
============

These tags are defined by the PC (using the Program Committee button) for speakers to use to help categorize their talk. These are, obviously, exposed to the outside world.

I suggest you log into the ESE2009 sub system (https://www.eclipsecon.org/submissions/ese2009/) and examine what values were used last year for both types.

The code shows that there is no way to delete tags. I can probably do it from the MySQL backend, but it's not clear what impact this will have on the submissions.

To add a new PC tag, you must be Conf Chair (or Queen)

To add a new talk tag, you must be on the PC (or Conf Chair, or Queen)

> - To add a tag to a talk, you must be a Program Committee Member

See the two types of tags, above. That should provide indication as to which tags are used by whom.

From here, I'll rename this bug so that we can track the effort of adding a Delete option for both types of tags.

Please see bug 307799 for more background on tagging.

Wow, I didn't realize that there was more than one type of tag. Too bad we used the same terminology for two different things.

I see now that a tag I created in easy2010 has insinuated itself into the submit page there! Now when you submit a talk to easy2010, you *must* choose a tag for it. This was a Talk Tag that I created when I was logged in as a PC member, and now it will be there forever, forcing its use upon everyone.

On that same topic, we now have a little problem. Bernd created a Talk Tag called "test" in the ESE submission system. Assuming this works in ESE as it does in easy2010, everyone who submits a talk will now be required to choose a tag. We didn't expect this to be the case, and we didn't document this anywhere. I'm afraid this will be confusing for submitters.

Denis, how much hassle would it be to delete that Talk Tag in ese2010?

In the meantime, I have edited the tag to say "New submission," hoping that most submitters won't be confused by that and will feel confident that checking that box won't mess anything up.

Here's a bit more info on why I would like to be able to delete Talk Tags.

After a tag is created, it shows up on the submission form. Once Talk tags are
part of the submission form, every submission must choose at least one tag, or
the form returns an error.

Currently, tags can be created and edited in the sub sys, but they can't be
deleted. So if a tag is created by mistake, it becomes part of the submission
form, whether it's correct or not.

We ran into this recently. We weren't using Talk tags, but someone created one
anyway. It became part of the form, and from that point on every submitter had
to choose that tag or they couldn't submit.
