A NPE is raised when a diagram is selected in the model explorer, and the property view is open.
A diagram is a notation node, it seems that the notation.edit plugin is not installed by default when installing Papyrus. So, for developers, this bug is not easy to reproduce. It is easier for end-users to reproduce the bug.
