I found out that most of my coding starts with a search (Ctrl-H) and I always exand all search results. I would like a setting to always expand results for me.

You can hit the 'Expand All' button. You can provide a good quality patch if you really want this feature. In that case please add a comment to bug 132721 and reopen it.
