Description Prakash Rangaraj CLA 2010-06-16 01:56:24 EDT
Apple has unofficially deprecated Carbon and asks the developers to move on to Cocoa. Probably Eclipse can also follow the suit.
Comment 1 Mike Schrag CLA 2010-06-16 08:15:19 EDT
6 months ago, i would never have agreed, but the SWT guys have really done a great job with the Cocoa build on 3.6. I finally switched a couple months ago, and I can actually recommend that my users switch as well. Good riddance to the Carbon build. I don't see any reason to continue support for it at this point.

I think it will take a very long time for Apple to completely get rid of Carbon, but we also need to put a stake in the ground and put all of the effort into one version. This seems like as good a time as any to do that. There are a number of developers who are confused as to why there are multiple versions -- see some of the questions on StackOverflow.com, for example -- and we should do what we can to reduce that complexity.

I've opened bug 317309 to discuss removing other platforms from the build in 3.7.

Taking ownership to get it out of the default inbox. Track bug 317309 to see the conversation about which platforms should go away.
Comment 5 Silenio Quarti CLA 2011-04-28 11:02:18 EDT
The eclipse carbon build is still done in 3.7, but it is considered unsupported. We will probably stop building it the 3.8 cycle.
Comment 6 Kim Moir CLA 2011-04-28 11:05:31 EDT
It will be my first order of business once 3.7 is released :-)
Comment 7 Kim Moir CLA 2011-09-20 10:27:05 EDT
Can this bug be closed? I removed carbon early in the 3.8 cycle.
