Description Pawel Pogorzelski CLA 2010-05-11 06:03:09 EDT
Non matching hunks are not visible in compare editor. This surfaced recently even more after Synchronize with Patch feature was released (bug 236169).

Take as an example hunk affecting a file that doesn't exist in the workspace. Such file is decorated with a regular conflict icon. Compare editor shows both sides empty with labels "Local File" and "Remote File (After Patch)". It's hard for user to figure out what's the reason.

Another case is patch removing a file which doesn't exist locally. Here the decorator in the Synchronize view is more descriptive though.

In cases when Compare editor can't be populated with any reasonable content we could use this real estate to provide user with the cause.

Information should be also enhanced when there is some content available (some hunks match) but non matched hunks exist.

There is a discussion about improving the way of working with patches on bug 196228 and bug 190844.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
