Description Kevin McGuire CLA 2003-02-06 17:13:41 EST
I wasn't sure where to find the UI for adding a linked resource. Maybe the
way we have it now is ok, but as it wasn't obvious I thought I should report
it.

I was confused whether I should be "New"'ing or "Import"'ing.

When I looked in the New menu I thought I might see "linked resource" as a
type of thing to add. I did eventually find it under "New->File" and "New-
>Folder".

Since resources being linked already exist, it seems that "Import" might've
been a better place, since you're not actually creating something new, just
adding it to the workspace. Its unfortunate that we don't have an "Add" menu
instead of "New", as that would've been the best choice.

D'oh, forgot to switch Component field.
Comment 2 Nick Edgar CLA 2003-02-10 22:01:48 EST
This is inconsistent with adding external projects to the workspace, which is
done as an import wizard. However, for 2.1 having linked folder and file
creation makes the most sense. Will reconsider menu structure for 2.2.
Comment 3 Kevin McGuire CLA 2003-02-11 15:43:00 EST
Maybe its just my brain, but again I got tripped up when I wanted to use an
external folder for jdt build output. I picked "Browse" where it showed the
path, but then it just showed project/folder stuff. I had to do "Create New
Folder", then "Advanced". So it was really buried, and in my mental model I
don't think of linking as an advanced folder creation function.

Again, I'm not creating a new folder, I am linking to an existing. Dunno,
there's something messed up here.

This PR has been added to the 2.1 "wish list" from other components.
Please see if there is anything we can do to address Kevin's specific complaint.
I don't see us making a radical change to the UI at this point.
Comment 5 Jim des Rivieres CLA 2003-02-19 16:20:15 EST
As you will recall, one of the "original wishes" for 2.1 was that linked
resources be off the beaten track so that users would not be tempted to
exercise this brand new this feature and inadvertently screw over some plug-
ins. In that light, the the current arrangement is just fine. But I agree that
we should revisit in 2.2.
Comment 6 Knut Radloff CLA 2003-02-19 16:36:34 EST
The Java build properties in particular is an area where we need to remove a
few layers of UI when creating linked resources, post 2.1.
Comment 7 Kevin McGuire CLA 2003-02-19 19:50:33 EST
>>In that light, the the current arrangement is just fine.

I disagree. I think the current UI is non-intuitive, which is different than
encouraging people to use them.
Comment 8 Nick Edgar CLA 2003-02-19 21:39:09 EST
Deferred to 2.2.
Comment 9 Michael Van Meekeren CLA 2004-05-21 13:25:55 EDT
Marking for LATER, please comment if you think this is important for 3.0.
Comment 10 Denis Roy CLA 2009-08-30 02:19:11 EDT
As of now 'LATER' and 'REMIND' resolutions are no longer supported.
Please reopen this bug if it is still valid for you.
