Summary: Presentation Names preference setting not respected throughout PDE

Description Curtis Windatt CLA 2010-03-09 12:48:33 EST
1) Open Preferences > PDE
2) Change "Show plug-in objects in editors and dialogs" to Presentation Names

Instead of seeing "org.eclipse.foo" names should be "Foo Plug-in" (if available).

We apply this setting inconsistently throughout PDE. We should either use it consistently or remove the preference (my vote is for the latter).

Working:
Import Features wizard
Plug-in Selection dialog/Open artifact (however filtering only symbolic name)
Export Plug-ins
Export Features
Plug-ins View

Not-Working:
Import plug-ins wizards
Targets (content, implicit)
API Baselines pref page
Plug-in Registry View

Broken:
Dependencies Tab of manifest editor
- Shows symbolic names, hit add... choose a plug-in... labels change to presentation names... save... labels change back
Plug-in Dependencies view
 -NPE in platform UI
Target Platform State view
- NPE in platform UI

Marking for investigation in M7.

Changing the preference also causes problems in the Add Extension dialog as many extensions end up with blank labels.
Comment 2 Chris Aniszczyk CLA 2010-03-10 15:51:02 EST
I've always found this preference crazy.

I think the better way to do this is via decorations and have the ability to search for things via id or name.

I would like PDE to be more consistent, but there just isn't time to worry about a crazy preference that no one uses.
Comment 4 Eclipse Webmaster CLA 2019-09-06 15:35:43 EDT
This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
Comment 5 Julian Honnen CLA 2019-09-09 02:23:42 EDT
Please remove the stalebug flag, if this issue is still relevant and can be reproduced on the latest release.
