Description Patrice Kerremans CLA 2003-01-19 06:28:57 EST
One cool feature I often use is the splitting of the javaeditor (this way you
can view 2 or more java files at the same time), but when maximizing a
javaeditor (by double clicking it) it only maximizes that one editor, and the
other editors become invisible, I would like to have all the editors remain
visible. I've tried to 'draw' what I mean below:

1. the workbench is open, the package view, console is visible and I've stacked
two javaeditors, say E1 and E2.
----------
|  ----  |
|  |E1|  |
|  ----  |
|  |E2|  |
|  ----  |
|        |
|        |
----------

2. if today I double click on one of the editors' tab, say E1, that one editor
gets maximized and the other, E2, is hidden.
----------
|--------|
||      ||
||      ||
||  E1  ||
||      ||
||      ||
|--------|
----------
3. This is what I'd like,thouh: both editors stacked and the pair get maximized.
----------
|--------|
||      ||
||  E1  ||
||------||
||  E2  ||
||      ||
|--------|
----------

Unfortunately, we have no time for the 3.0 release to work on this issue. If
someone from the community is interested to look at this use case and the
usuability issues this brings along, please annotate this bug report and post a
message in the platform-ui-dev@eclipse.org mailing list.

Note: although this facility may be useful for some, it should still be possible
to zoom an individual editor.

The feature being requested here is already possible. Simply create a new
perspective that contains no views, and the editor area will occupy the entire
workbench window.

We already have a "hide editors" hotkey -- perhaps we could add a feature to
"hide views" instead of changing the behavior of maximize.

We might also consider making double-click bindable to a command just like a
shortcut key... in that case, the "maximized-split-editor" folks could bind
double-click to "hide/show views" and the linux folks who use double-click to
shade windows could bind double-click to "minimize".

IMHO, we shouldn't change the existing maximize behavior. The ability to zoom
into a single editor is useful, even when the editor area is split.

Hmm... maybe I spoke too soon. I whipped up a quick hack that let me maximize
the whole editor area, and it was more intuitive than I thought. I'm no longer
sure which one I like more. :-)
