It would be great to have a simple site to post ideas from the community.

A good example of this is sites like:
    http://ideas.symbian.org/
    http://wordpress.org/extend/ideas/
    http://ldn.linuxfoundation.org/brainstorm/all

I like this idea. It would be a more positive version of http://ihateeclipse.com/

I'd like the idea even more if someone in the community would volunteer to set it up and manage it. Right now the Foundation staff have their plates full on other stuff.

I understand the time constraints.

I'm trying to see if there's some type of wordpress plug-in or something we can use to setup the site. I don't mind investing some time if I can reuse an existing piece of software to do the site.

I spoke with a couple folks from the Symbian Foundation, they are using a customized version of an 'ideas platform' provided by a company called Spigit. It's a SaaS offering which comes at a price.

I'm wondering if there's an open source alternative we can use.

I don't know of one?

I finally found an open source one.

http://www.ideatorrent.org/

Ubuntu uses it and seems to work. What do you guys think?

If Denis hooks me up with a vserver (ideas.eclipse.org) some things...
    * A web server with PHP5
    * PostgreSQL 8.3
    * Drupal 5.x/6.x

I can start on it.

Shouldn't be that hard to theme ever :)
Comment 8 Denis Roy CLA 2010-03-12 15:33:19 EST
Chris, I think xmpp.eclipse.org can serve double-duty, and it likely has most of everything you need there.

Another option that came up when I was visiting with Google yesterday. The Google Moderator can be used:

http://www.google.com/moderator/

It can be branded and achieve what we want with an ideas.eclipse.org

What do people think?
Comment 10 Denis Roy CLA 2015-12-15 15:30:16 EST
I don't think we'll get traction on this anytime soon.
Comment 11 Nobody - feel free to take it CLA 2019-09-01 11:53:14 EDT
What is the advantage of such a website over a general issue tracker? Even immature ideas could be submitted?
