Description
Denis Roy
I think we should take your recommendation in 280730 and convert the Users page to a Contribute page. Most of the content on the Users page doesn't really seem to fit under a Contribute or Get Involved heading. And that content is pretty important, especially for newbies or people who want to expand their usage. I'm renaming this bug... I'd like to redesign the /users page. It scans really poorly, and if someone is looking for, say, Forums, it just doesn't jump out at them. Can we redesign this page to have a more .... conventional layout? cc'ing Chris, who should now be getting these emails. (In reply to comment #3) > I'm renaming this bug... I added this bug to my to do list. I'd like to have a hand in this redesign. What are the key messages? Who is the target audience? Obviously, the target audience is users. We need to put information on this page that users care about. Links to downloads. Links to tutorials. New and noteworthy. Future releases. Getting help. That sort of thing. Some information about the project structure is important as that has an impact on how the user gets help, and provides an on ramp for contributing. We should take a 'kill with kindness' approach here. Bonus points if we can make it have a compelling look and feel. > Obviously, the target audience is users. We need to put information on this

We already have prominent links to downloads on the home page and in the nav bar, so I think listing downloads here is redundant, whereas Forums are nowhere to be found. I'd really like to see a "less is more" approach here.

I'd really like to see a "less is more" approach here. Having a redundant big red "download" button or something is not necessarily bad. While I agree that "less is more" is the right approach, ultimately, "useful to users" is the most important concern here. I'd like to see the page focused exclusively on the user. Links to Eclipse Corner (/articles) are more for adopters than users and should be skipped. Likewise, most of the contents of /resources is for adopters; we need to do some more filtering here. The link to "Online courses" is bogus. A link to "forums" is necessary, but a more direct link to the "newcomers" forum is, IMHO, an important addition. A large part of our community hangs out on Stack Overflow; I think a direct link there would be a good thing. The "portals" page [1] feels out of date and can bear some scrutiny. I've included this here as I believe that some of the content from the portals page makes sense directly on the /users page. [1] http://www.eclipse.org/community/portals.php Also need some very explicit discussion of "support" (i.e. use the actual word "support"). I'm wrestling with whether or not we should make an explicit statement about the kinds of support we do *not* provide (i.e. phone/email). After reviewing the user page I think we will go down the path of "less is more". I think the goal of the user page is to redirect users to what they are looking for before they know what they are looking for. We will split the info into 4 group/boxes with links to different resources. I'm thinking of adding a tool-tip when you roll-over a link to show some kind of description. #1 : NEW TO ECLIPSE - Download link http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/ - Compare Eclipse Packages http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/compare.php - Newcomers Forum http://www.eclipse.org/forums/index.php/f/89/ - Books http://www.eclipse.org/resources/?type=book, article http://www.eclipse.org/articles/, training http://marketplace.eclipse.org/taxonomy/term/34, tutorials, Webinars http://live.eclipse.org/ - Documentation http://www.eclipse.org/documentation/ or http://help.eclipse.org/indigo/index.jsp ? #2 : Support - Create Account https://dev.eclipse.org/site_login/createaccount.php - Report Bugs https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/enter_bug.cgi - Forums http://www.eclipse.org/forums/ - Mailing List http://www.eclipse.org/mail/ #3 : Community - Marketplace http://marketplace.eclipse.org/ - Eclipse Labs http://code.google.com/a/eclipselabs.org/hosting/ - Portal http://www.eclipse.org/community/portals.php - Events http://www.eclipse.org/community/events/ - Webinars http://live.eclipse.org/ #4 : Getting Involved - Development Resources http://wiki.eclipse.org/Development_Resources - Source Code http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/CVS_Howto - Nightly Builds http://www.eclipse.org/epp/download.php (In reply to comment #10) > #2 : Support > - Create Account https://dev.eclipse.org/site_login/createaccount.php > - Report Bugs https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/enter_bug.cgi > - Forums http://www.eclipse.org/forums/ > - Mailing List http://www.eclipse.org/mail/ I wouldn't include the mailing lists under support. They're used for developer / team / project discussions, not for tech support that falls to the forums. I'm not sure that they even fit the users page at all. I like where you're going with this. Can't wait to see a mock-up. I'm back! Here is my first draft to the Users page redesign : http://www.eclipse.org/users/v2.php Don't hesitate to leave feedback, comments or ideas on how we can improve the Users page! Here is my first draft to the Users page redesign : > http://www.eclipse.org/users/v2.php > > Don't hesitate to leave feedback, comments or ideas on how we can improve the > Users page! I like the direction this is taking. Some feedback.... 1. How about we change 'Explore the Eclipse universe...' to be 'Using Eclipse...'. Also make it on one line so it does not take up so much space. 2. Change 'Getting Started' to 'Getting Started with Eclipse' 3. Change Download Eclipse to be 'Download an Eclipse package' 4. Add 'More Information:' to the start of the third bullet. 5. I would remove the 'Learn more about Eclipse projects' from this first section. 6. Change 'Forums' to be 'Ask questions on the Forums' 7. Change 'Mailing List' to be 'Follow project mailing lists' 8. Add Documentation to the Looking for Help section 9. Change 'Join Our Community' to be 'More Eclipse Resources'. Have the list be the following: a. Discover more Eclipse plugins on Marketplace b. Learn more about Eclipse projects c. Other open source project on Eclipse Labs d. Eclipse related Events e. Developer portals 10 I am not sure about the Contributing to Eclipse section. It seems very advanced for a user page? Thoughts? Thanks Ian for the feedback. I have made all the changes except #1. I'm waiting to see if Nathan still has the PSD for the background image. I like that there is 4 boxes here because it does help balancing the page. I also think that it might help to give ideas to intermediate user on what more they can do with eclipse. If we decide to remove this box I suggest that we would center the 3rd box in the page. > 10 I am not sure about the Contributing to Eclipse section. It seems very > advanced for a user page? Thoughts? In that regard, I would suggest: - move "Report Bugs" from the Getting Help section and place it in the Contribute section - add links to some of our newcomer FAQ in the Getting Help section: Newcomer FAQ: http://www.eclipse.org/home/newcomers.php Eclipse FAQ: http://wiki.eclipse.org/Eclipse_FAQs Couple of nits: > c. Other open source project on Eclipse Labs "project" needs to be plural > d. Eclipse related Events Events shouldn't be capitalized :) > 6. Change 'Forums' to be 'Ask questions on the Forums' Forums shouldn't be capitalized either. FWIW, I like the four boxes. I agree it balances out the page. I like the page. It contains a lot of information without looking too busy. Can you try bumping the font size up one or two points? Thanks Denis and Wayne for the feedback. I did all the changes requested by Denis. Concerning Wayne comment I created a second page to view the different with a bigger font: Default nova theme size : http://www.eclipse.org/users/v2.php Larger font : http://www.eclipse.org/users/v2.php?size=bigger Let me know what you guys prefer! thanks (In reply to comment #15) > Thanks Ian for the feedback. Agreed here. I'm not sure source code and nightly builds are 'that' useful on a users page. which leaves 'Development Resources' and 'Support Eclipse' left over, which i think are still relevant to users. Could we add these as tertiary links somewhere on the page. Ideally linking to /committers and /donate which do a much better job of explaining thier purposes (like nightly builds and source code) I'd like to see the download eclipse link a bit larger (11pt), cause inevitably people want to download eclipse. Portal in the Join our community section should be Portals I'd like to suggest adding more emphasis to Updating Eclipse on the users page, I believe this is a pretty common task for a user, and one that also generates a lot of help requests. Pointing some folks in the right direction could help. Page is really coming together Chris! Excited to see the next revision. As usual, I have lot of opinion ;-) First and foremost, I like the overall architecture of this page. I just think some things need to be more emphasized and other things re-organized. My first and most emphatic feedback is that the download link should be SUPER prominent, not in the same styling as other links on the page. It needs to scream WANT ECLIPSE? CLICK HERE! I do like the "learn more about packages" and Articles, Tutorials, etc. links in the Getting Started section, but in a secondary style. I do not think the forum link should be under Getting Started, but rather in the Looking For Help section. I think the Read the Documentation link would be better placed in the Getting Started section. Here's how I'd re-organize the 4 catregories: Getting Started: DOWNLOAD NOW!!!, Articles, Tutorials, Webinars, Documentation, Training. I'd leave out books, who reads those anymore? ;-) Looking For Help: Create account to acces forums. Read the Docuementation and Wiki, Eclipse FAQ. More Resources (I'd rename to something more descriptive, perhaps "Go Deeper"): Marketplace, Labs, Events, Learn about Eclipse Projects. Contributing (I'd rename to Get Involved): REPORT BUGS (more prominent, but not as prominent as DOWNLOAD NOW), Support Eclipse (also prominent), Wiki, then the rest. In my opinion this is on a good path, but I think the content is still confusing mainly because some things are seemingly mis-categorized. Right now I think there's too much duplication in the links; my proposal leaves a little bit of duplication (eg, link to the online docs in two places) but not much. Oh, and I forget to say, I agree with almost everything Nathan said in Comment 20. > I'm not sure source code and nightly builds are 'that' useful on a users page. > which leaves 'Development Resources' and 'Support Eclipse' left over, which i > think are still relevant to users. I've also removed the links on all icons except the first one. I think we should keep a download link on that icon. The addthis buttons are now at the top of the page. I think if we want to have more success with this page we need people to share it. I also added a shadow around all 4 boxes to make them pop-up more. The title is now Using Eclipse... We are planning to make this live soon. If anyone see's anything that should be changed or moved around please leave feedback about it! thanks "looking for Help" has - Ask a question in the Newcomers Forums and - Ask questions on the forums I'd remove the latter. After that, I think this should be pushed live ASAP. It is already 100 times better than the current page, and we could still bring some small incremental improvements to it afterwards. Also, I really like all the social networking stuff going on on that page. True, I`ve ask Nathan to do a quick code review before. Once he took a look at it I will push it online My only nit with the page is that the code header needs to be updated to indicate the correct author, etc. +1 otherwise! (In reply to comment #27) > My only nit with the page is that the code header needs to be updated to > indicate the correct author, etc. > > +1 otherwise! Done, thanks Nathan. It should be live shortly. I believe this is done? (In reply to comment #29) > I believe this is done? Yes it is! |
