If I go to http://planet.eclipse.org/planet/ and click on the whitespace under someone's name, it highlights their entire blog entry and their name and hackergotchi.  This doesn't happen with http://planet.fedoraproject.org/ or http://planet.gnome.org/.

I dislike it.  It really feels like a bug.  Like some element is being stretched into that whitespace where it shouldn't.  Do people copy individual entries to their clipboard often enough that a single click for this is necessary?

But if it's a personal preference thing, I'm fine to shut up.

I guess I'm more interested in why the various planets' code diverges so much to cause something like this.  Is there a canonical upstream for it?

Because they are customized. Planet is just a python script that fetches RSS entries and throws them into a template engine. The templates are our own creativity.
