When you open the Plug-in Registry view, a background process kicks in to 'initialize the plug-in registry'.

That's fine, but the view is unusable during that time and if I touch anything in the view, the whole workbench freezes.

Wassim,
this should be fixed in bug 262545. Have you had chance to try with HEAD?
