The preference on General->Workspace: "Save automatically before build" has a tooltip that says "Save modified resources automatically before manual build" .
The label text for the preference should also highlight that this applies only to manual builds.
Also, I noticed that when the preference is checked and  when auto-build is enabled , cleaning a project would save modified resources anyway. I was slightly surprised after having read the tooltip.

I guess this might be the result of a Clean action being a manual action, triggering a Build all action, probably also regarded as a manual action.
