ING Direct ad

As mentioned in bug 242019 some of the Google ads on the mirror page are not correctly targeting eclipse based offerings correctly.

Don mentioned that this might help the ads become more targeted.

For the mirror selection page i'd suggest that we add ignore tags to the names of the mirrors as they contain a lot of the random words that may be triggering bogus ads.

I think the problem on the mirror page is that there is near-zero content on the page that Ad Sense can use to come up with reasonable ads. You have the name of the file being downloaded (which could be anything), and then a list of geographic mirrors, and that's about all.

What if we were to come up with a list of words that we wanted to promote for the google ads and then just set that content to be invisible to the eye, but the google adsense code would still be able to parse it since its in the code.

I thought the ad could ignore portions of the page? If so, we could just leave out the list of mirrors.

I'm willing to concede that Eclipse committers are not perhaps not rich, but I wonder about this ad....

Yes, was just about to log a bug myself.

It appears that the downloads page can't host relevant Google ads unless we let the search robots hit the page and also put a paragraph of relevant text somewhere to help choose appropriate ads.

I would +1 for removing the ads from this page temporarily until we're able to find a good solution.

How about we target the Galileo release to figure out the best option of serving relevant ads?

I've finally done a bit of digging on this, here is what I think will work:

We update the robots.txt to allow Adsense to scan download.php:

User-agent: Mediapartners-Google
Disallow:

(note, this will not allow Google the search engine, just their ad crawler).

Next, I tell google to ignore the list of mirrors with the tag:

<!-- google_ad_section_start(weight=ignore) -->
<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

At the bottom of the mirror selection Page, I'll reiterate the paragraph from the main page:

You will need a Java runtime environment (JRE) to use Eclipse (Java 5 JRE recommended). All downloads are provided under the terms and conditions of the Eclipse Foundation Software User Agreement unless otherwise specified.

That should be enough for relevant ads to start appearing again.

Google ads has the ability to place alternate ads instead of Public Service Announcements -- I would suggest that I have it promote firefox as a back up:

Thoughts? If Webmaster is OK with the robots.txt update, I'll look after the rest.

I have not heard any feedback about this in years. Closing.
