Doing an autotools build of a large project can result in a long wait during a state called "refresh" on the wait monitor.  There is no way to cancel this action and no evidence of what it is doing or how much time is left.

I am closing this as WONTFIX.  The original problem has been solved whereby the refresh is now quite fast and so it is not believed that cancellation is required during the middle of the task.
