Description Peter Ford CLA 2008-09-29 19:23:03 EDT
At the time of writing, http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/moreinfo/jre.php seems to imply that all packages except Java EE will work with a 1.4 JRE. In fact it would seem that only the Classic package would work ('out of the box') with a 1.4 JRE.

And http://help.eclipse.org/ganymede/topic/org.eclipse.platform.doc.user/tasks/running_eclipse.htm states, "you also need a 1.4.2 JRE".

Please see the following newsgroup post and the rest of its thread:
http://www.eclipse.org/newsportal/article.php?id=26279&group=eclipse.newcomer#26279

So jre.php needs correcting, potentially with reference to http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/compare-packages and perhaps with the addition of more detailed information in an "Advanced" section - possibly along the lines of http://www.eclipse.org/eclipse/development/eclipse_project_plan_3_4.html#Appendix1 and an explanation.

And running_eclipse.htm needs "1.4.2" deleted from the 1st sentence. Also, it may be worth replacing other use of 1.4.2 in that page with 1.5, and perhaps making reference somewhere to the corrected version of jre.php.

Thanks for filing this bug report. Would you be willing to submit a patch?

Perhaps. But I am relatively inexperienced and have no tools installed to produce a patch (except on an "air gapped" network). How about if I just make the changes in a full replacement jre.php file and provide that?

And what about the other change? (The one for help.eclipse.org.)

If you've installed one of the Eclipse packages, you have everything you need to create a patch. I won't burden you, but if you want to know how, it's easy -- just ask here. Otherwise, I'll certainly take an entire jre.php!

As for help.eclipse.org, that page is the documentation for the Classic download, which does work with 1.4.2.
