Bug 233711

Summary: [rename] issues inappropriate warning of shadowing where there is overriding
Product: [Eclipse Project] JDT Reporter: Friedrich Steimann <steimann>
Component: UIAssignee: JDT-UI-Inbox <jdt-ui-inbox>
Status: CLOSED WONTFIX QA Contact:
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Version: 3.3.1
Target Milestone: ---
Hardware: PC
OS: Windows XP
Whiteboard: stalebug

Description Friedrich Steimann CLA 2008-05-23 12:30:21 EDT
Build ID: M20071023-1652

Steps To Reproduce:

public class A {
	public void m(Object o) {}
	void n() {
		m("abc");
	}
}

public class B extends A {
	void n(Object o) {}
}

Renaming n in B to m issues warning in preview that this will shadow m in A, where it actually overrides it. Perhaps nevertheless a valid message (I am not sure whether the definition of shadowing includes this case) but in any case confusing.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
