When I try to install Mylyn components using the new update manager, as in https://bugs.eclipse.org/227335 I sometimes see the update manager's restart dialog flash up for a second or two just as the install finishes. It then, however, disappears without me doing anything.

Which build are you using?  This sounds like bug #224004

Yes, you are right, it is a duplicate. I was using the M6a build (which was built one day too early to solve this problem). The latest integration build I20080415-1646 seems to solve this problem.
