Bug 225005

Summary: Eclipse crashes when I browse files from File -> Open
Product: [Eclipse Project] Platform Reporter: Alireza Sami <sami2box>
Component: IDEAssignee: Platform-UI-Inbox <Platform-UI-Inbox>
Status: RESOLVED DUPLICATE QA Contact:
Severity: major
Priority: P3 CC: emoffatt, remy.suen
Version: 3.3.2
Target Milestone: ---
Hardware: PC
OS: Windows XP
Whiteboard:

Description Alireza Sami CLA 2008-03-31 17:57:27 EDT
Build ID: 3.3.2

Steps To Reproduce:
1. File -> Open
2. Go to c:\
3. Move mouse on folders (do not select any)
4. The hard disk starts working heavily, then the eclipse crashes.

More information:
First I found this when I was trying to add an external jar to my project. After trying different scenarios, I finaly found that the problem happens only in Open dialogs where there are large size folders (folders with so many sub folders and files in them).

I tried the same thing with RAD 6 and it works fine. Then I tried with Redhat Studio and it crashed too.

Then I used -XX:MaxPermSize=256m but it still crashes.

Environment:
- Windows XP (with the latest updates)
- Mc Afee 3.6.0.574

(selected major because my other colleagues have the same problem and because that the program crashes completely)

There is a problem with the dialog on Vista (see bug 188317), but since you are on XP, I guess these are two different issues. Which Eclipse build did you download? Eclipse Classic? What JRE are you using?

Here is what I have in about window:

Eclipse Platform
Version: 3.3.2
Build id: M20080221-1800

I run the eclipse.exe directly. I have two JRE's installed on my system: j2re1.4.2_16 and jre1.5.0_14 and 1.5 is the default JRE

Do you have any hs_err_pid*.log files in your Eclipse folder (where the eclipse.exe file resides)?

I have only one log file: install.log

I found a bug which may be the main reason for this. CM Synergy may be causing this issue. The only difference is that I have no problem with IE or Mozilla.

Please see this: https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=87798#c30

Unfortunately, I cannot upgrade my CM Synergy because our software versions are forced by the company. Is there anything that you can do at your side?

I don't think so. We use the OS-defined dialog (i.e. Windows), not a custom one...

I'm going to mark this as a dup of bug 87798. Feel free to re-open if you can show that this is not the issue.
