Is there any reason why window images have to be in GIF format and launcher images BMPs? Isn't it possible to convert the images on the fly to the appropriate format during runtime?
I believe I can set the Shell's image to any Eclipse supported format. Why is there a restriction on formats in the PDE? And why are those formats not one but many different ones in Product branding?
And why is the launcher icon not used as the standard Application icon when no application icon has been set?

I believe we're restricted by what the launcher can display on startup.

However, we updated so the branding section supports PNGs so I'm going to mark this a dupe.
