Description Onno van der Straaten CLA 2007-10-02 05:34:38 EDT
Hi,
I have the privilege to be working on a new eclipse.org vserver for the EPF project. For security reason outside access from those vservers is restricted, which I understand. But for installation and possibly applications running on those vservers, outside access might be desirable and maybe even necessary.

For this reason I want to suggest adding a HTTP proxy server to the infrastructure. vservers could be allowed temporary or maybe permanent access to this HTTP proxy server for the purpose of installing and configuring those servers using package managers such as rpm that require outside access.

Thanks and Regards,
Onno

Agreed, this would be useful.

We're going to open up outbound (to destination) ports 80 and 443 for the vservers. This will let you load pretty much any package you want, but restricts it to HTTP access. FTP access is just to much of a shotgun.

We won't setup a Proxy server. We will instead revert to allowing outgoing connections. If your vserver cannot connect to external hosts on ports 80 and port 443, please let me know.
