Description Todd E. Williams CLA 2007-09-25 16:18:45 EDT
The Eclipse log file is actually called .log and is used for message of all levels (status, info, warning, error, etc). However, the PDE UI contains the only view to this log file and refers to it as the Error Log. The issue is that when Eclipse users see things written to the .log file that show in this view, they sometimes assume the software is misbehaving and actually generating errors which causes them concern. Sometimes messages in the log are perfectly normal and the view title causes a misinterpretation.

A simple suggested solution would be to rename this view to remove Error from the name.

Man, 2 months ago no activity concerning the log view, now it seems to be a hot topic :)

With the idea to refactor the view into a separate plug-in for easier consumption for end users, this might not be a bad idea...

My only concern would be people getting freaking out when the can no longer find their 'Error Log' view.

Sure, anything to keep Todd happy.

The name change is something we will document as a 3.3->3.4 thing.

Brian,

The idea of refactoring the log view makes since to me since it's generally useful even to end-users, not just the plugin developers it was originally designed for. Would it still be installed in the "view tree" under PDE or move to a more general category?

Chris,

Thank you very much! Your team really does an awesome making the community more productive with each release.

You can find more information about the refactoring effort in bug https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=202044 and the bug it depends on. I think it will appear in a category other than PDE. We would like to see it get shipped in the platform feature so it does not have any PDE dependencies.

Setting up proper depends relationship.

Holding this bug hostage until I figure out what I want from Todd ;)

Surely my heartfelt thanks should suffice. ;-)

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
Comment 8 Julian Honnen CLA 2019-09-09 02:45:10 EDT
Please remove the stalebug flag, if this issue is still relevant and can be reproduced on the latest release.
