When Chart is used outside of reports, the ODA/DtE of BIRT can be used by Chart to access data and do grouping/sorting. So an example should be added into chart examples plugin to demonstrate how to do.

An example is added into Data Operations section of chart examples, it demonstrates how chart works with ODA/DtE(BIRT Data Engine) to get grouped/aggregated data set and binds these data without grouping/aggregation by chart-self.
