There are in increasing number of newsgroup posts asking why Eclipse does not work on Windows 64-bit and/or how to get it working.
The consensus answer seems to be that there is not yet a 64-bit build of Eclipse for Windows, but that running Eclipse on a 32-bit JVM/JDK works just fine.
Can we include an item about this on the download page, http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/
It might be tempting to put it on http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/moreinfo/java.php where the note about unzipping lives, but I'd argue that most visitors won't ever see that page because of the multiple obvious links directly to the ZIP file.
See also Bug 169776 for the similar unzip problem note.

Can you paste a Windows 64-bit user-agent string?

Oops, didn't mean to close as fixed.

Unfortunately I can not - I am not a Windows 64-bit user, only reporting the issue as it was a common question on the newsgroups. I will admit that I haven't seen it come up very often in the last week or two, though.
I'm curious if by ying specific messages to particular user agent strings, we are still going to miss people who should see the messages - I mean, are we relatively confident that they won't be using some other OS to download than to run?

We may miss some, but I'm guessing not many. I simply want to avoid cluttering up the main download page (which has a broad audience) with all kinds of platform-specific warnings.

Thinking outside the box, would a newsgroup auto-responder bot make sense? For instance, if we had a bot to monitor the eclipse.newcomer/eclipse.platform groups for new thread message containing "Windows", "64-bit" and "error" it automatically posts a reply... would that have any value? We could then have default auto-replies according to common keywords.

cc'ing Ed Merks for his views on comment 4, as he spends a great deal of time on the newsgroups too.

Now that's an interesting idea. Back in the VAJ days, I took it upon myself to post a weekly newsgroup message titled something like "FAQ - Please read this before posting!"
But the idea of a semi-intelligent auto-responder seems even better, as it would target individual questions. But it sounds like enough of an effort (and potentially political issue) to justify a separate Bugzilla, right? If you create one, please CC me on it - I would be happy to contribute in any way I can to such an effort.

The 64 bit thing comes up not so frequently but once in a while. Most folks who use 64 bit probably realize they need to be careful to get things that specifically work with 64 bit. I feel sorry for Vista users in general away. What a nightmare of incompatibility issues, but that's another rant topic and maybe 64 bit isn't just a Vista issue...

That makes sense, so I won't address this issue specifically.

I will rename this bug so that we can determine if an autoresponder bot can be of any use. Said bot could automatically respond to NNTP posts when a specific set of keywords are found.

The list of keywords/rules and responses should be stored someplace where the community can maintain them.

As the years go by I don't see anything justifying an auto-responder bot, other than it being cool. Please reopen if I'm wrong.
