The committer rep newsgroup is not listed on eclipse.org
http://www.eclipse.org/newsgroups/index_all.php

I suspect it's done on purpose, but I am not sure what that purpose is. I am guessing that we don't want the general population to use the forum to ask the committers questions like 'My code compiles in my workspace, but why do I get a ClassNotFoundException when I run?"

Unfortunately, this raises the bar to join in or start a dialogue. I, for one, only use browsers that come out of the state of Washington and don't have any newsreaders installed. I don't want to be forced to start downloading/installing things just to ask a question on an eclipse.org newsgroup.

Your guess is 100% correct.

I suppose you do all your coding with notepad.exe? ;-)

The browser (singular) that comes out of the state of Washington only works (as) reliably (as it can) on operating systems out of the state of Washington.

Said Operating systems include a newsreader software that is likely already installed on your OS -- it's called Outlook Express.

Because you don't need to download and install the newsreader, I assume this is no longer an issue?

Alternatively, I stuffed a link waaaaaaaay at the bottom of this page:
     http://www.eclipse.org/newsportal/

This will allow you to use your Washington browser to discuss. If we expose the group any more than that, I fear your guess in comment 0 will become a reality.

If you instead use the Washington-based email app called Outlook, there is a newsreader plug-in for Outlook available here: http://shorelinesoftware.com/

I don't blindly buy into anything and everything that comes out of Washington, so I don't use Outlook. I support a Massachussetts-based product for my email purposes :)

The link waaaaaaay at the bottom of the page is quite sufficient.

Thank you for the quick resolution.

I posted my first question(s) to the committer reps on the newsgroup. It should make for an interesting thread.

I don't know if I should open a new bug for this, but this bug is still open, let's reuse it.

After Ed Merks responded to my newsgroup post, mine vanished from:
http://www.eclipse.org/newsportal/thread.php?group=eclipse.board.committer.reps

The caching algorithm on that newsportal software isn't great. I cleared it, and your post "reappeared".

Please ensure that the committer reps news groups is discoverable as belonging to the list of all newsgroups. It's better to get some bogus posts than no posts at all, as currently appears to be the case. I don't care if this is fixed via https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=196078 or not as long as there is some link that leads committers to the newsgroup. These links would be even more useful if they included not just a news: scheme link, but also a link to the archive for that newsgroup. One needs to go through way to many contortions to even find out there is an archive.

I would also suggest that prefacing each direct link to the newsgroup with a link that encourages searching of the existing posting of the newsgroup be included. I.e., for EMF when you use the nav bar to navigate to http://www.eclipse.org/modeling/emf/newsgroup-mailing-list.php we have a link to http://www.eclipse.org/search/search.cgi?cmd=Search%21&form=extended&wf=574a74&ps=10&m=all&t=5&ul=%2Fnewslists%2Fnews.eclipse.tools.emf&wm=wrd&t=News&t=Mail
so now it's far more likely that folks will search for previous answers rather than posting duplicates because they don't know any better. The Eclipse platform and newcomers newsgroups are rife with duplicate posts and most folks don't realize that there are very useful search pages that will tend to turn up endless good answers to their questions.

Done.

Hmmm... there are no archives for this group. I'll create them.
