Summary: [Navigator] Inplace renaming in navigator is problematic (1GDVOJN)

Description Andre Weinand CLA 2001-10-10 22:19:51 EDT
I don't like the inplace renaming in the navigator:

- whenever I select "rename" I expect a rename dialog, but nothing seems to happen because the overlay editor
in the navigator is not "visible" enough.

- there is no guidance (or error indication) for the new name

- the overlay editor doesn't go away when selecting another element. I'm able to continue without leaving the rename mode. This is confusing.

- in-place renaming seems to be inconsistent with navigators that have more constraints on the new name (like the Java package viewer) and use out-of-place renaming

NOTES:

TRH (5/21/2001 1:41:49 PM):
IMHO, in-place editing is a must have feature. I agree however that it is currently buggy, and that perhaps there are times when dialogs should be displayed as
a secondary approach to changing the name. For example, what happens if I select multiple resources and request to do a rename?

More than just inplace editing issued raised.

Pls consider these points in your work on improving support for global actions
like cut/copy/paste
Comment 3 Randy Giffen CLA 2002-04-18 16:00:24 EDT
1) Visibility - After selecting rename the name is outlined and selected
2) Guidance - We could show guidance in the status line. Consider after 2.0
3) Now goes away when another element selected
4) Better guidance on the status line should be able to indicate the
constraints. If the new name is invalid we should not apply the change to
avoid opening a dialog. Have to ensure that the status line message is visible
enough.
Comment 4 Randy Giffen CLA 2002-08-01 11:01:19 EDT
reopened to investigate showing status line information
Comment 5 Kevin Haaland CLA 2002-08-29 17:36:21 EDT
No plans to change current behavior
