Description

I think this is a great idea; however, is there a concern that users will find this channel convenient for asking tech questions directly to committers? Is there anyway we can make this harder to find for users? or at least put an announcement as the first post dictating the purpose of this newsgroup? Or do we need a better name for it? eclipse.foundation is a prime example of a newsgroup riddled with (off-topic) technical questions -- luckily we have Ed Merks et al. to redirect users; I just fear that no matter how much we try hide it or rename it, technical questions will abound. One could try eclipse.committersonly, but again it sort-of implies a great channel to ask questions... and no one reads the posting guidelines anyway :-) Sorry, I don't have an easy solution for this. I love the idea, but I just know what's going to happen. I believe this is simply a side effect of having a public transparent newsgroup. Ed can handle the polite redirection :-) how about something with "board" in it. eclipse.board.committer.reps or some such. While it is ok to redirect etc it would be good to avoid disappointment and get people on the right track from the beginning. I agree with Darin, this is a side-effect of transparency :) In terms of the name... eclipse.committer.reps? We should have Denis post a couple first posts in there with "ATTN: This newsgroup is for committers only" or something to that matter... in the end, we will still deal with people posting where they please unless we set up some type of ACLs I think eclipse.board.committer.reps is reasonable, and also opens up the eclipse.board namespace, should the board ever want other NGs. We could also keep this newsgroup from being accessible through the web portal, unless some committers cannot access the NNTP server directly. Any way to hookup access control to this news group so that only committers can access it? (In reply to comment #8) > Any way to hookup access control to this news group so that only committers can > access it? > Technically we can, but I think it's a bad idea: a) It's not open and transparent b) I'd have to create a nntp userid/password specifically for committers, which is something no one wants (we all have enough passwords) c) Can't connect the nntp server to your committer account for lack of encryption My vote is eclipse.board.committer.reps as proposed by Jeff, and webmaster posts the POSTING GUIDELINES as suggested by Chris. This should be a good start. Any off-topic posts should be swiftly identified as such, as Ed and crew do on eclipse.foundation. We can deal with the problem of the NG being unusable because of too many off-topic posts when/if we get there. Thoughts? +1 I like the idea of having a newsgroup. But I thought we already have the committers mailing list for this purpose. One could simply just subscribe the list through GMANE and you make a newsgroup out of it. That's how I read a couple of Eclipse.org dev mailing lists. :) But yes, the news server would not be news.eclipse.org but news.gmane.org. So having an eclipse.board.committer.reps newsgroups makes it more official. ;) +1 Feel free to do this when you have time Denis, the new committer reps term doesn't really start until April 1st ;) well, some of us are already committer reps ;-) All I'd like is for a few more committer reps (incoming and current) to +1 the proposed solution in comment 9 before going ahead with this. +1 +1 -1 oh, wait, it was the name I suggested... +1 ;-) Jeff's a flip-flopper!!! +1 +1 Didn't want to be the only one who didn't vote. ;) The group has been created, and posting guidelines have been .. posted. I hope the wording is right - don't want to sound too strict, but at the same time, I want it to be clear that this group isn't a free gateway to ask committers tech questions, as you guys already monitor enough newsgroups for that purpose. Do we want HTML archives for this group? Thanks Denis, the committer reps love you and your work. I couldn't have worded it better myself. Closing as fixed. |
