Description iristest2004 CLA 2007-01-18 13:49:29 EST
Currently, when a Job runs, Eclipse shows a Progress Bar on the Status Bar with an icon that is supposed to represent a Conveyor Belt. Unfortunately, many people can't recognize what it is, and our UI folks think it is ugly. (I've heard people refer to it as "the hairy thumb"!)

Currently, this icon is hardcoded into org.eclipse.ui.internal.progress.ProgressAnimationItem. We'd like the ability to change this icon.

I would be happy to review a patch should you provide one

It would be great if you could contribute an improved icon. That would benefit the entire community.

I agree with Prakash that a better icon for all makes more sense, rather than making it API. Note that there are 4 icons that are affected by changes in this area. See the attachment with pictures and explanations.

For bookkeeping purposes: these icons were provided by graphic design team in 3.0, bug 67882, and the graphics database has an older version of progress_ok.gif (with a yellow explanation point).

I'll submit a graphic design request for updated icons.

submitted to IBM graphics team (request #6388).

I suggested getting rid of the conveyor belt and representing a "cluster of tasks" (stack of horizontal bars, cluster of balls, etc). The "cluster" could be the view tab icon and the icon in the status area when something is finished without error (ie, get rid of the green explanation point).
The error overlay would be used for the error state. When jobs are running but nothing is finished, the icon in the status bar would be washed out/masked in some way to indicate that the jobs were incomplete.

status update: we received a proposal but I have sent it back for changes. The metaphor used was a partially filled progress bar, with various overlays for the states. It looked much better and more polished than the "hairy thumb" but when it's shown in context (adjacent to the live progress bar), it just caused confusion, as if two progress bars are being shown, one that is alive and one just sitting there.

proposals from graphic designer

This is the latest proposal from the graphic designer, specifically column C/D.

1 - represents a running task that has no specific icon.
2 - would be shown in the progress view tab and in status line when jobs are running
3 - shown in the status line when a job finishes with non-error results
4 - shown in the status line when a job finishes in error

I think these are more polished than the existing icons.
I would probably go with column C and ask that they be made green, because having them blue vs. green just introduces the question "why" for me, and I don't think the color difference helps in differentiating between the "live" progress bar and the icon itself.

Thoughts?

(In reply to comment #7)

These icons look better than the current icons. I too like C, and either green or blue is fine with me.

From A & B, the overlay is also good. We can probably work in the same lines for Bug# 297489

zip file of new icons

Here are the new icons from the graphic designer.
They are located in the "ovr16" and "progress" subdirectories in the zip file provided.

I'm not sure the names match what you want to use, Prakash, I'll leave that up to you.
