Description Chris Goldthorpe CLA 2006-12-05 12:36:04 EST
On Linux using Firefox the table of contents, as well as the index and bookmarks view has a gray background, which I don't care for. Looking to solicit opinions as to whether this should be changed so that it uses the same color (white) as the page background. This would also increase consistency with the help view. Screen shot to follow.

Hi Chris,

It is a little weird--we have seen something that might be related. Maybe you could address both at the same time.

While we have not seen the TOC/etc views with the gray backgrounds in Firefox for standalone/infocenter modes, we have seen the Content side with a gray background appearing in Firefox, if the topic has no 'body background-color' set for its CSS.

That is, the HTML file in Firefox by itself shows a white background, but then when it is a topic file in the infocenter, it suddently gets a gray background. This is in Firefox 1.0.7 running on Windows.

We normally alleviate this appearance of by ensuring our topics' CSS has a body background-color defined, but sometimes things slip through without a linked CSS file. It would be great if there was some fix to this as a default to white. We have had input that people dislike the gray background showing by default.

The gray color almost looks like the same gray as the toolbar button line in the user interface itself.

I will attach some topic files that display the gray background in Firefox in infocenter mode, if their CSS has no body background-color set.

doc plug-in for testing, css does not have body background-color set

Unzip this zip file and you'll get a doc plug-in to test. In 3.1.1 infocenter mode, viewed with Firefox 1.0.7, topic content gets gray background automatically. CSS file for these HTML files does not set body background-color. When HTML file is opened singleton in Firefox, the background is white. But in the help webapp, somehow gray is being applied into the content side.

same doc plug-in,but with CSS file now has body background-color set

This is the same doc plug-in, but with a body background-color=#fffff added to the CSS file used by the topics. When these topics are loaded in a 3.1.1 infocenter in Firefox 1.0.7, now they appear with white background (enforced by the CSS).

The preference is that if there is no body background-color set, to have the default in the Content side go to white instead of gray. It visually almost looks like the Content side is picking up gray from the UI or toolbar layout.

I've noticed the same thing where the default background color of a page ends
up being gray on Firefox when you open it in help. I think this is happening because the background color is being set in an outer frame which contains the content frame. I agree that it would be better to let the background color default for both the content and for the TOC/Index/Bookmarks, the toolbars should keep the same background color they have now.

Agreed with what Chris wrote: toolbars keep the same background color and have a default for content/TOC/Index/Bookmarks views background (presumably white. :-).

Another variant of this is that the tabs for selecting the view (TOC/Index/Bookmarks etc) are all gray, the active tab is not white.

The problem originally described in this bug report is now fixed. The problem described in Comment 4 also appears to be fixed, not sure if that was already fixed before my recent changes or as a result of them.
