Description Krishna Venkatraman CLA 2006-10-02 16:02:52 EDT
Not all report developers are familiar with SQL syntax for accessing a relational data source to retrieve data for a report. The Visual SQL Builder allows for graphical editing of SQL, increasing developer productivity, and making query construction possible for a wider user base. With a visual SQL query builder, users have the freedom to create queries without writing a single line of SQL code. The query builder is a point-and-click visual user interface that walks novice users step-by-step through the process of specifying a query that extracts data from database tables. It is expected that developers will use the visual SQL query builder for creating many of the SQL queries they need. However, for more complex queries, the developer will likely use an editor to work with the SQL directly. BIRT must support both models for working with a SQL query.

We plan to adopt DTP's Visual SQL Query Builder, which will have an initial contributed version by the end of the year. We will then be able to evaluate and proceed with its integration with BIRT's Data Explorer.
