We need some type of createText method similar to what we need for the createTreeViewer. The reasoning behind this is that a user may want to supply their own text control. In PDE's case, we would like to use FormToolkit to adapt the text control when created.

Fix released to HEAD >20060815.

The method is called doCreateFilterText.

For consistency, I renamed the method that creates the tree viewer to doCreateTreeViewer.

Chris, can you please verify that the fix is what you need?

Note that there was a method getFilterControl() that returns the text control.  Why is this getter not sufficient for what you want to do?
