It would be really great if then compiler could ignore assert lines when 
compiling for JDK 1.3. Reason:

I would like to use assertions in my code while developing/debugging, but I'd 
also like to deploy my code to JDK 1.3. If the compiler would be able to 
generate JDK 1.3 compliant class files out of a JDK 1.4 compliant source file, 
this would be really great.

This is not planned for 2.0, maybe after we can reconsider.
