Looks this is a problem.
As model defined, the display name of data source is read only.
When user change the name, it changed the name of data source instead of display name of the data source.
The name shows only when the display name is null.

I can rename data source with 2.1M5. How do you reproduce this bug?

Is this a recent regression? In the property sheet for data source, I only see name, and no display name property.

When I rename the datasorce. I can the name of datasorce is changed in Properties. But it can't be changed in data explorer.

GUI uses the display name of data source. But model don't provide way to rename display name. The string renamed is the name instead of display name.
