Description Tom Klaasen CLA 2002-04-03 01:39:44 EST
Maybe it's a good idea to provide some screenshots of Eclipse on your site.
This is standard practice in the OSS world, and could attract a lot of extra
users.

I've prepared some screenshots, so that could be a start. Mail me with
instructions on how to send them to you.

Cheers,
tomK

I think this is important too.

The shots should be from all the different platforms and some variation in the
perspectives of course.

I very agree with you.
The first thing I search when I gone on www.eclipse.org was some screenshots.
I have some friends which never download Eclipse because they prefer to see what
they will have before to download and install it.

Every free software has a web site with screenshots, except Eclipse. It will be
a very good publicity for the project if the link is on the home page.
Comment 6 Ricardo Jorge PC de Almeida CLA 2003-10-07 10:19:14 EDT
Well, screenshots are in the "New and worth... features" :-)
I agree. There should be a screenshots section.

the screenshot website is already there (rudimentary as it is), it's just not
linked anywhere

Comment 9 Ed Burnette CLA 2005-06-30 22:24:46 EDT
Those are awful, and old.
Comment 10 Adam Kiezun CLA 2005-08-24 09:06:25 EDT
I think it's really bad that there're no screenshots on the website.
Is it on any sort of plan to put some up?
Comment 11 Eclipse Webmaster CLA 2006-01-31 13:39:55 EST
Wayne, can we look into getting some screenshots/screencasts up for Phoenix 1.1?
Comment 12 Wayne Beaton CLA 2006-01-31 14:11:05 EST
Can do.
Comment 13 Eclipse Webmaster CLA 2006-02-01 11:46:29 EST
It would be interesting to get the community to take some screenshots that represent Eclipse In Action on various platforms. We could also define categories - JDT, Ant, Webtools, etc. Users could post their screenshots here, in this bug, and we could publish the best ones. If we go this route, would need some posting guidelines (ie, plugin restrictions, code on the screenshot, etc).

Just a suggestion..

D.
Comment 14 Ed Burnette CLA 2006-02-01 12:46:15 EST
Looking at screenshots people have sent me over the years, I'd be very skeptical the quality would be good enough on community supplied screenshots. It's just hard to get consistently good screenshots and everybody has a different idea of what "good" means. Ask anybody who's worked on a multi-author book.
Comment 15 Wayne Beaton CLA 2006-03-07 23:19:41 EST
Where are the screenshots in CVS?
Comment 16 Eclipse Webmaster CLA 2006-03-17 13:41:49 EST
I don't believe they're in CVS.

How do we feel about replacing screen shots with screen cams?

I have a bunch of screen cams at http://www.eclipse.org/callisto/java.php.

Or do we really want screen shots?
Comment 18 Ed Burnette CLA 2006-08-22 14:49:39 EDT
Four is not what I'd call 'a bunch'. Screencasts are nice but they're harder to make than screenshots. Given that the screenshots (like http://www.eclipse.org/screenshots/fullscreenXP/JavaPerspective.gif) can't be kept up to date, why do you think screencasts would?
Comment 19 Eclipse Webmaster CLA 2006-08-22 16:13:33 EDT
Screencasts require users to click and wait to showcase the exciting stuff. Consider:

http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/
http://kde.org/ -> screenshots to the left
Comment 20 Wayne Beaton CLA 2006-09-20 23:52:33 EDT
After much stalling, I have updated the screenshots page.

Please see http://www.eclipse.org/screenshots

Since I only have access to Windows XP and Linux, the screenshots are on those platforms only. I may replace some of the Win XP shots with some GTK ones (in addition to the KDE ones). I added a couple that weren't previously there, including "Compare with Local History", "Java Debugging", and "Visual Editor".

I'd love it if somebody could contribute some images for other platforms, especially the Mac.

Any thoughts on where they should be linked from?

Comment 22 Ed Burnette CLA 2006-09-21 14:00:58 EDT
The KDE ones look funny, as if they were improperly scaled.

You need a lab with each major platform represented so you can do stuff like this consistently, rather than relying on random contributions.

> The KDE ones look funny, as if they were improperly scaled.

Agreed. I wanted to put something there that wasn't Windows XP. This was the best that I could do with what I have available. I'll see if I can get something better from my Fedora installation.

Actually, I'm looking for contributions of a less random kind. If I can't manage to get anybody to volunteer some good screen shots, I'll go bother Kim, Ward, or some other Mac-o-phile. In the meantime, I'll get some better Linux shots myself.

Comment 24 Wayne Beaton CLA 2006-10-02 14:47:54 EDT
I'm marking this bug as fixed since I think the original requirement has been satisfied. I will continue to look for and add new screen shots on an ongoing basis.

Did you want a Windows Vista screenshot?
There's an old one at: https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/attachment.cgi?id=28571
