Diagram updates based on domain model changes should be minimized.

This is supported through our support for non-persisted views.  If a model changes occurs in a container, the container can synchronized canonically with the semantics and create a non-persisted view.  The view remains unpersisted until the user modifies it.  This reduces secondary edit from occurring.

Additionally, the notation meta-model is designed in a way to minimize secondary edits as well through the use of relative bendpoints, style separation, and auto-sizing capability.
