I'm going to move this to the community bugzilla component to get the attention of people from the EMO... they should be able to advise on the steps to proceed in proposing a new project. I'll be glad to help a bit with translation (on my personal time), if this can provide my kids with a French Eclipse version any sooner. See also bug 127240, where someone is offering to donate translations for the RCP base. Could the EMO provide guidance on the best approach to handle such contributions? Other relevant questions from Tomaz in bug 127240: We would like to add the slovene translations to the official NLS plugins. We would like to know HOW is the "right" way to do it? What proceduers are taken, what tools are used... It would make sense to open a project wich would provide "unoffical" eclipse NLS packs, wich would be more up to date with the current eclipse releases. IBM's latest nls pack is for eclipse 3.0! Such project would centralize now dipersed translation efforts, wich would be most beneficial for the eclipse project as a whole, IBM could merge the translations into it's official NLS pack, more utilities wich would facliltate translations woud be developed etc. Actually the latest packs are for 3.1.1. See the 3.1.1 language packs off the download site for 3.1.2. (In reply to comment #3) > Could the EMO provide guidance on the best approach to handle such > contributions? So here are some thoughts on this from the EMO. First, with regards to creating a project, that's pretty simple. Some group of people need to write a proposal and send it in following the normal process as defined at http://www.eclipse.org/projects/dev_process/ As part of this effort, some group of individuals is going to have to be willing to step up to be the committers and the project lead for this. I am assuming that one or more of these people will also have to become familiar with how translations are inserted into the project build processes, and help act as co-ordinators with the project(s) consuming the translations. I like the idea of solicitiing translations from the community. I would suggest that the best way to do this would be to have individual translations submitted as bug reports. When at least two other people have reviewed and approved the translation, then a committer could add it to the translation. Does this make sense? Is it helpful? The IBM CDT Team is setting up in preparation to commit CDT translations to the CDT CVS repository. We would like to coordinate with this effort going forward where appropriate. The question is however, should the translations for each project live within those projects' CVS repositories themselves, or should it be a completely self contained project with its own repository? How tightly coupled should the translation effort be with the regualr development of the project the translations are provided for? I would personally love to see a tightly coupled approach, where translations are provided piecemeal to a project as its development progresses, rather than as a "big bang" at the end, but this may not be entirely practical either given that the IBM translations tend to be done by product teams after Eclipse goes to GA. Food for thought anyway... I asked a few questions in the newsgroup about how to contribute corrections on language packs: http://dev.eclipse.org/newslists/news.eclipse.platform/msg57966.html Paul Webster pointed me to ask platform-releng list, but before that, I remembered I was cc'ed on this bug :) So, was there any progress on this subject? At least for making the translations available on CVS, so it makes easier to track changes and merge/repack corrections, if there is no interest by language pack donators on maintaining a translation project? *** Bug 189140 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** There is a proposal for a translation project: http://www.eclipse.org/proposals/babel/ See this bug for information about the upcoming Creation Review, and to add comments and/or vote: https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=196891 |
