Desired use case: list components with distinct component type IDs (e.g.
"jst.ejb" and a custom ejb type id) within the same component working set (e.g.
the set with label "EJB Projects").

I am not sure what is asked here. Do you mean that we need Java EE specific "working set types"?

I am closing this bug for now, since it is very old and seems not have big attraction. Rob, if you want to proceed on this, please feel free to reopen and provide more information.
