It seems like the as you type validation shouldn't run at all when it's turned
OFF, and it definitely shouldn't be throwing NPEs.

Note:  I get this quite freqently simply by opening, closing, and reopening the
same WSDL file in quick succession.  I've also been getting it randomly opening
JSP and xml files, as well.  

I tried to raise the priority of this bug to P2 due to the ease and frequency
with which I hit this bug, but it wouldn't let me.
